Feb 24 - My Mixing Process

In this week's blog, I will describe the post production/mixing process of my 8-track studio recording project of Tangled

On Monday February 12, at 1 PM, I returned to the studio to add a virtual instrument on my saved recording. Originally, I planned on making the virtual instrument another synthesizer, like an organ or strings, but since Tyler forgot his guitar, I decided to make the virtual instrument a rhythm guitar. However, because the ProTools keyboard used for my virtual instrument could only play one note at a time, instead of multiple notes at the same time, I decided to make the virtual instrument another synthesizer playing the rhythm guitar part. It was a pain drawing in each note individually on the virtual instrument track, but luckily I didn’t have to overdub it over the recorded instruments, like I did the vocals and the synth. I arranged all the notes in the order I wanted them, and it sounded great with the recording when I was done. I did mix sound stages 1, 2, and 3, but I didn’t like them, so I drew a fourth sound stage. Next, I mixed the equalization, reverb, dynamics, and delay on each track, so that I had the sound of the two overheads near the center; the snare, the kick, the lead guitar, and the virtual instrument in the center; the tom on the right; the bass on the left; the synth in the back; and both vocals in the front center. Finally, I saved a new copy of the recording, shut the studio computer down, and left the studio at 5:50.
